It’s a phrase I’ve heard countless times since arriving in Japan, and after taking part in the traditional tea ceremony, I feel like I understand its spirit even better. One of my favorite memories from my exchange so far has been participating in the Japanese tea ceremony with my fellow international students. I was genuinely surprised and happy to discover that our university has its own tea ceremony room, which made the whole experience feel even more authentic. What made the afternoon so special was the warm atmosphere. Everyone welcomed us with such kindness and made us feel comfortable, even though everything was completely new to us. I especially enjoyed learning the Japanese phrases used during the ceremony and discovering how every movement and every word has a purpose. Listening to our instructor's stories about the history and philosophy of the tea ceremony helped me appreciate not only the tradition itself but also the values behind it. And of course, I can't forget the matcha—it was absolutely delicious! Even though it wasn’t my first traditional tea ceremony, I really enjoyed every moment of it. Looking back, I think what made the experience truly unforgettable was sharing it with the other international students. We weren't just learning about Japanese culture—we were creating memories together. Experiences like this remind me that studying abroad is about much more than classes. It's about discovering new traditions, meeting wonderful people, and collecting memories that will stay with you long after your exchange ends.
